The Role & Expectations
As an animal care worker, you spend your day making sure animals are healthy and happy. You might work with pets, farm animals or wild creatures - anywhere animals need help.
Your typical day includes feeding animals, cleaning their spaces, checking them for signs of illness or injury, and giving them exercise and attention. You'll learn to spot when an animal is unwell or distressed so you can get them help quickly. If you're working in a shelter or rescue centre, you might also help animals settle into new homes. The work is physical and sometimes tiring, but most people who do it say it's really rewarding to know you've made an animal's life better.
Daily Responsibilities
- Assess the health and behaviour of animals in various settings, including shelters, veterinary clinics, and wildlife reserves.
- Administer medications, vaccinations, and treatments as directed by veterinarians or senior animal care staff.
- Provide daily care, including feeding, grooming, and exercising animals to ensure their physical and mental well-being.
- Maintain clean and safe environments for animals by performing routine cleaning and sanitation of living spaces.
- Educate pet owners and the public about responsible animal care and welfare practices.
- Assist in the rehabilitation of injured or neglected animals, working closely with veterinary professionals.
- Keep accurate records of animal care activities, health assessments, and treatments administered.
- Participate in community outreach programs to promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership.
