Documentary Filmmaker

Documentary Filmmakers tell true stories through film, shining a light on real people and real events that matter. They research, film, and edit to create documentaries that help audiences understand important issues and see the world differently.

The Role & Expectations

As a Documentary Filmmaker, you tell stories that are actually true. You choose a subject - maybe a social issue, a historical event, or someone's life story - research it thoroughly, then film real people and real situations. Your job is to capture the truth in a way that grabs people's attention and makes them care.

Your work involves planning what to film, setting up cameras and equipment, interviewing people (which means listening carefully and making them feel comfortable sharing their stories), and then spending time in the edit suite sorting through hours of footage to shape it into a compelling film. It is creative work that requires patience and attention to detail. You will travel to different locations, work with small crews, and sometimes deal with difficult or upsetting subjects, but the reward is creating something that can change how people see the world.
