The work is researching topics, writing clear and engaging copy to a brief, editing and polishing, and reworking pieces on feedback, alongside finding clients and chasing payment. Strong writing, good research and reliability matter, plus the ability to adapt your style to different clients and to meet deadlines without anyone chasing you.
Being self-employed means no steady wage, no sick or holiday pay, and income that rises and falls with the work you can win, often low and uneven while you build up. You set your own hours and usually work from home, which suits self-starters but can be isolating and uncertain.
No specific qualifications are required, though good English and a portfolio of writing matter most; many writers build samples by starting small. You register as self-employed with HMRC, manage your own tax, and grow through reputation and word of mouth.
