Acting and performance is a discipline that requires you to develop your presence, imagination, emotional range, and physical awareness in the service of bringing characters and stories to life. Whether the work is on stage or in front of a camera, the core demands are similar: to listen with genuine attention, to respond authentically in the moment, and to make bold creative choices grounded in real understanding of the text, the role, and the world of the story. Training in acting is as much about developing a professional working practice as it is about acquiring technical skills. At Southampton Solent University, this three-year full-time degree gives you the freedom to pursue your ambitions as an actor while building practical experience in the industry. You will work across stage and screen, developing your technique in both forms and building the versatility that a professional acting career demands. The programme combines studio-based training with real-world experience, ensuring that what you learn is grounded in current professional practice. You will develop your skills in text analysis, physical performance, voice, and characterisation, supported by a teaching team with professional backgrounds in the industry. Graduates of acting and performance programmes work as professional actors in theatre, television, film, and digital media, as well as in corporate roleplay, community theatre, and arts education. Many develop portfolio careers that combine performing with other roles in directing, casting, teaching, or writing. The discipline also develops transferable skills in communication, confidence, adaptability, and creative collaboration that are valued in business, marketing, education, and the media.
