BSc Adult Nursing
About this course
Adult nursing is the largest branch of the nursing profession and sits at the centre of health care in the UK. Adult nurses care for people from late adolescence onwards across a vast range of settings, including hospitals, community clinics, patients' own homes, care homes, and specialist units. The role demands clinical competence, careful judgement, and the ability to build trusting relationships with patients and families, often during some of the most difficult periods of their lives. It is a profession that combines scientific knowledge with genuine human care. Roehampton University's BSc Adult Nursing is a three-year full-time programme that prepares you to deliver safe, high-quality nursing care in both community settings and hospitals, helping people to maintain health and manage illness across adult life. You will study anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical assessment, evidence-based practice, and the organisational context of healthcare. A substantial part of your training takes place on placement in NHS and other healthcare settings, where you will develop practical skills under the supervision of registered nurses and other health professionals. These placements are a core part of the programme and essential to your preparation for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council on graduation. Registered adult nurses work in hospital wards, surgical and critical care units, community nursing teams, district nursing, occupational health, GP practices, and a wide range of specialist services. Many nurses go on to develop expertise in particular areas such as oncology, neurology, diabetes, or palliative care. Others move into management, education, or advanced practice roles, including nurse practitioner and nurse consultant positions. Adult nursing is a profession with a clear career ladder, strong job security, and the opportunity to make a direct and significant difference to people's lives.
