BSc Architectural Technology with foundation year
About this course
Architectural technology occupies the practical and technical heart of the design and construction process, bridging the gap between architectural vision and built reality. While architects are concerned primarily with design concept and spatial quality, architectural technologists focus on how buildings are actually made: the technical design of building fabric, the specification of materials and systems, the resolution of details, and the management of the information that guides construction on site. The role is central to delivering buildings that are safe, functional, sustainable, and well constructed. This four-year, full-time programme at Coventry begins with a foundation year that builds the design knowledge and digital skills you need before entering the main degree content. Across the programme you will develop your ability to use creativity, innovation, and digital modelling tools to address real-world design and construction challenges, blending architectural thinking with technical rigour and a strong emphasis on sustainability. The programme includes a placement year and a year abroad, both of which give you the opportunity to develop professionally in different environments and to see how the built environment industry operates in different national contexts. Graduates work as architectural technologists and architectural technicians in architectural practices, engineering consultancies, construction companies, and client organisations. Chartered membership of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists is the recognised professional standard, and the degree provides the academic foundation for that route. Roles in technical design, building information modelling, project management, and sustainable construction are typical starting points. Further study at postgraduate level in architectural technology, building engineering, or sustainable design is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.
