BA Architecture
About this course
Architecture is the art and science of designing the spaces in which human life is lived. It encompasses far more than the aesthetics of buildings: it is concerned with how the built environment shapes behaviour, wellbeing, social interaction, and our relationship with the natural world. Architects must be simultaneously creative and analytical, capable of generating bold spatial ideas and translating them into technically precise, buildable designs that satisfy planning requirements, structural demands, environmental constraints, and the practical needs of their clients and users. At Birmingham City University this part-time programme frames architecture as an act of care, developing practitioners who are thoughtful, innovative, and equipped to challenge conventions rather than simply reproduce them. You will develop your design ability across a range of scales and contexts, from individual buildings and interiors to urban fragments and public space, building the portfolio of work that architectural education centres on. The programme balances studio design work with technical, historical, and theoretical study, ensuring you graduate with both the creative vision and the intellectual grounding that the profession requires. Work placement experience is embedded in the degree, providing direct exposure to professional architectural practice alongside your academic work. A sandwich year is also available, giving you the opportunity to work in a practice for an extended period before completing your studies. Graduates from a BA Architecture typically proceed to postgraduate study at Part 2 level, which is the next stage on the path to becoming a registered architect in the UK. Part 1 graduates also work in architectural practices as architectural assistants, in urban design, interior design, heritage conservation, and the broader built environment sector while continuing their professional training.
