BSc Biomedical Science with foundation year
About this course
Biomedical science is the study of the biological, chemical, and physiological processes that underlie human health and disease. It is concerned with how the body works at the molecular, cellular, and systems level, and with the laboratory techniques used to diagnose illness, monitor treatment, and investigate disease mechanisms. Biomedical scientists are the professionals who analyse clinical samples in NHS and private laboratories, and their work is essential to the diagnostic pathways that underpin patient care across all areas of medicine. At Coventry University, this four-year full-time programme is designed to give you valuable hands-on experience in biomedical science, supporting your development for roles in healthcare, research, or industry. The programme includes an integrated foundation year, providing a thorough scientific grounding before you advance to the main degree curriculum. A sandwich year with a year abroad and work placement gives you direct professional experience in a biomedical laboratory or research environment and international exposure to how the discipline is practised in different healthcare and research contexts. Entry typically requires around 56 UCAS tariff points. Biomedical science graduates work in NHS clinical laboratories in areas such as haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood transfusion, as well as in pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, research institutes, and the medical devices industry. Many graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as Biomedical Scientists. The hands-on laboratory experience from placements is a significant advantage in a competitive job market. Postgraduate study in specialised biomedical disciplines or research is also a common next step.
