BEng Building Services Engineering
About this course
Building services engineering is the branch of engineering responsible for the mechanical, electrical, and environmental systems that make buildings function safely, comfortably, and efficiently. Heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical power distribution, lighting, plumbing, fire safety, and building automation systems all fall within its scope, and the decisions building services engineers make have a direct impact on energy consumption, occupant wellbeing, and a building's carbon footprint over its entire lifetime. As the built environment becomes a central focus of sustainability and decarbonisation efforts, building services engineers are increasingly central to achieving net-zero targets. At Leeds Beckett this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough understanding of how to design, install, and manage the systems that provide safe and healthy environments in which people live and work. You will study heating and cooling systems, electrical distribution, lighting design, renewable energy integration, building regulations, and the computational modelling tools used in modern building services practice. Sustainability and the reduction of carbon impact are running themes throughout the curriculum, reflecting the transformation that is under way in how buildings are designed and operated. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, providing professional experience in a real engineering environment, international exposure, and a practical portfolio alongside your academic studies. Graduates move into careers in building services design and consultancy, contracting, facilities management, energy management, sustainability consulting, and the broader construction and infrastructure sector. Many work towards professional accreditation through the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. Others continue to postgraduate study or specialise in areas such as energy management, smart buildings, or low-carbon design.
