BEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining the physical infrastructure on which modern life depends. Roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, water treatment systems, coastal defences and urban drainage are all the work of civil engineers. As global populations grow and climate change increases the pressure on existing infrastructure, civil engineers face some of the most significant and consequential professional challenges of the coming decades, combining technical problem-solving with environmental responsibility and social impact. At Loughborough University, one of the UK's most highly regarded engineering institutions, this three-year full-time programme develops your expertise across the full breadth of the discipline. You will study structural mechanics, geotechnics, fluid mechanics and hydrology, materials science, project management, engineering mathematics and sustainable design, building both the theoretical foundations and the practical engineering judgement that the profession demands. Loughborough's strong emphasis on applied learning, industry partnerships and excellent facilities means you work on real engineering problems and develop the professional outlook that employers look for. Civil engineering at Loughborough prepares you to tackle some of society's greatest challenges by designing and building the structures and infrastructure that support an increasingly urbanised global population in a rapidly changing world. Graduates pursue careers in consulting civil engineering, infrastructure contracting, local and national government, water and utilities companies, transport authorities, environmental consultancy and construction management. Many work towards chartered engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Loughborough degree provides the academic foundation for that professional journey. Further study at master's level is available for those who want to specialise in areas such as structural engineering, environmental engineering, project management or geotechnics.
