About this course

Crime Scene Science is the application of scientific methods to the investigation and analysis of crime scenes and physical evidence. It encompasses the collection, documentation and forensic analysis of evidence from crime scenes, including biological samples, trace materials, fingerprints, digital evidence and other physical data that can be used to reconstruct events, identify individuals and support the administration of justice. The discipline draws on biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and digital forensics, and it demands both rigorous scientific training and an understanding of the legal and procedural requirements that govern how forensic evidence is handled and presented in court. At Teesside University, this part-time programme develops your knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and the biological processes relevant to forensic investigation, including the construction of biological profiles for human identification encompassing sex determination, age at death, stature and biological affinity. You will study the recovery and analysis of human remains within the regulatory, ethical and scientific frameworks that govern forensic practice, developing both the theoretical foundations and the practical analytical skills needed to work in crime scene investigation and related forensic roles. Crime Scene Science graduates go on to careers in forensic investigation, police services, forensic science laboratories, the courts service and related fields in the justice system. Some specialise in areas such as crime scene examination, digital forensics, firearms and ballistics, fire scene investigation or biological evidence analysis. Postgraduate study in forensic science, forensic biology, digital forensics or crime scene investigation provides a route to more specialist roles, and professional development through organisations such as the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences supports ongoing career development.
