BSc Data Science
About this course
Data science has become one of the defining disciplines of the twenty-first century, reshaping how organisations in every sector make decisions, understand their customers, and create value. At its core it combines statistical reasoning, computational skills and domain knowledge to turn large and complex datasets into meaningful insight. It draws on computer science, mathematics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and applies them to real-world problems in business, healthcare, government, research and beyond. At the University of Keele you will study data science taught by leading researchers in the field, exploring the mathematical and computational foundations of the discipline alongside practical work with AI, machine learning and analytics in realistic contexts. You will learn to clean, analyse and visualise data, build and evaluate predictive models, and communicate findings clearly to varied audiences. The programme runs over three years full time and includes a sandwich year in industry, a year abroad and work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your technical development. The demand for data scientists is broad and growing. Graduates work in technology companies, financial services, healthcare, retail, logistics, the public sector and scientific research, in roles including data analyst, machine learning engineer, data engineer, business intelligence specialist and research scientist. The ability to combine technical fluency with the judgement to ask the right questions and interpret results responsibly is rare and highly valued. Postgraduate study in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence or statistics is a natural further step for those who wish to develop deeper expertise or move into more specialist research roles.
