BSc Diagnostic Radiography
About this course
Diagnostic radiography is the healthcare profession responsible for producing the medical images, including X-rays, CT scans, and fluoroscopic studies, that are essential to diagnosis and treatment planning across virtually every area of medicine. Diagnostic radiographers operate sophisticated imaging equipment, care for patients during what can be stressful and uncomfortable procedures, and work as part of multidisciplinary clinical teams to ensure that the right images are acquired safely and to the highest standard. The role requires both technical precision and genuine patient-centred care. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme develops the foundational knowledge and clinical skills needed to work safely with diagnostic imaging equipment across a range of modalities. You will learn the physics of medical imaging, anatomy and physiology, radiation protection principles, patient care and communication, and the clinical decision-making that supports high-quality imaging practice. A foundation year is available for students who need to build their scientific preparation before entering the main degree. Clinical placements are central to the programme, providing direct experience of working in NHS departments and developing the professional competence that is required for registration. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points. Graduates who complete the programme are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as diagnostic radiographers, which allows them to work in the NHS and independent healthcare sector. The profession offers excellent employment prospects, opportunities for specialisation in areas such as CT, MRI, mammography, and interventional radiology, and clear pathways for career development including advanced practice and research roles. Many radiographers also pursue postgraduate study in specialist imaging modalities, healthcare leadership, or radiographic research.
