BEng Engineering
About this course
Engineering in its broadest sense is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to design and build things that work. This programme at York takes an intentionally flexible approach, developing your knowledge of electronic, electrical, mechanical, and mechatronic principles so that you graduate as an engineer with breadth, not just depth in a single narrow specialisation. The course recognises that today's most significant engineering challenges, from clean energy to intelligent systems, require people who can think across traditional disciplinary boundaries. At York this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a professional engineering environment and develop the practical experience that complements your academic learning. Group engineering design and project work are present at every stage of the programme, incorporating real-world examples with genuine societal impact and building the collaborative skills that engineering practice requires. The programme also gives you the flexibility to choose where you want to focus your studies as you progress, allowing you to shape your degree towards the areas of engineering that interest you most. Work placements are embedded in the programme, reinforcing the connection between theory and professional application. You will develop skills in design, analysis, prototyping, and engineering communication, as well as the problem-solving disposition that engineering demands: the willingness to engage with problems that do not have single correct answers and to test and refine proposed solutions iteratively. Graduates move into roles in electronics, electrical engineering, manufacturing, renewable energy, automotive, robotics, embedded systems, and engineering consultancy, as well as broader roles in project management, technical sales, and innovation. Many pursue chartered engineer status through bodies such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Postgraduate study at Masters or doctoral level is a route for those drawn to research or advanced specialisation.
