BA English and Creative Writing
About this course
English and creative writing is a combination that develops two related but distinct capacities: the ability to read literature critically and contextually, and the ability to produce original creative work across a range of genres and forms. English literary study trains you to read closely, to understand how texts work, to situate writing in its historical and cultural context, and to construct careful critical arguments about meaning and form. Creative writing develops you as a practitioner, asking you to experiment, to find your voice, to engage seriously with craft, and to respond to feedback in a way that supports continuous development as a writer. At Coventry University, this part-time programme is designed to let your ideas shape your learning and guide you towards your career goals, within a supportive and inclusive environment, as the current description reflects. This learner-centred approach is appropriate for a discipline in which individual creative vision is central, and the inclusive culture recognises that writers come from a wide range of backgrounds and bring diverse perspectives and voices to their work. You will develop both the analytical reading skills that close engagement with literature provides and the practical craft skills that creative writing at a serious level demands, working across fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, or other forms according to your interests and strengths. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, providing substantial professional and international experience. Placements in publishing, media, arts organisations, education, or other creative contexts allow you to apply your skills in professional settings and to develop the career connections that matter in the creative industries. Graduates from English and creative writing programmes pursue careers in writing and editing, publishing, journalism, digital content creation, communications, public relations, teaching, arts administration, and a wide range of roles in the creative and cultural industries. Many also continue to write independently alongside other professional work. Postgraduate study in creative writing, English, or publishing supports those who wish to develop their craft or academic knowledge further.
