BSc Environmental Geography
About this course
Environmental geography occupies the space between the physical sciences and human enquiry, concerned with how natural processes shape the Earth's landscapes and ecosystems, and how human activities in turn transform, degrade, and sometimes restore those environments. It draws on earth sciences, ecology, climatology, and hydrology alongside the social and policy sciences needed to understand why environmental change happens and what can be done about it. At a moment when climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity are among the most urgent challenges facing humanity, environmental geography equips graduates with knowledge and skills that are genuinely needed. At Cardiff University, this three-year full-time programme gives you a thorough grounding in physical geography processes, including geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, and ecology, alongside the environmental management, sustainability, and policy dimensions of the subject. Fieldwork is an important part of a geography education, developing your ability to collect, analyse, and interpret environmental data in the field, and Cardiff's location provides access to diverse environments in Wales and the wider region. You will also develop quantitative and qualitative research skills, geographical information systems, and the capacity to critically evaluate evidence about environmental change and its causes. Environmental geography graduates are well placed for careers in environmental consultancy, conservation, planning, natural resource management, climate and sustainability roles in the public and private sectors, and international development organisations. The combination of scientific understanding and policy awareness is particularly valued in roles that sit at the boundary between environmental science and decision-making. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in areas such as environmental management, conservation biology, climate science, or geography, with some going on to research careers in universities or government agencies.
