BSc Environmental Science
About this course
Environmental science is an interdisciplinary field that uses the methods of the natural sciences alongside social and policy analysis to understand and address the environmental challenges facing the planet. Pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, resource depletion and ecosystem degradation are among the most pressing issues of our time, and the environmental scientist's role is to understand these problems rigorously, assess their causes and consequences, and contribute to evidence-based solutions. At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time degree is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Sciences and includes a sandwich year, year abroad and work placement, making it one of the most practically and internationally enriched environmental science programmes available. You will study ecology, earth systems science, climatology, environmental chemistry, environmental law and policy, and the research methods, including field surveying, laboratory analysis and geographical information systems, that environmental scientists use. Exeter has strong research connections in environmental science, and you will benefit from teaching by researchers actively engaged in questions of climate, biodiversity and sustainability. The sandwich and placement elements give you professional experience in environmental consultancy, conservation organisations, regulatory agencies or research institutions, and the year abroad extends your engagement with environmental challenges in an international context. A typical tariff of around 136 points is expected. Graduates work as environmental consultants, ecologists, conservation scientists, sustainability managers, policy analysts and researchers across the public, private and voluntary sectors. The accreditation provides professional recognition that is valued by employers, and many graduates go on to postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, climate change or sustainability, or to specialist roles requiring advanced expertise in particular environmental disciplines.
