BA Film Production
About this course
Film production is the craft of making films, encompassing the full pipeline from script development through pre-production planning to principal photography and post-production. It requires a combination of creative vision and practical competence, the ability to tell a story effectively through moving images and sound, and the organisational and collaborative skills needed to bring a complex production together. The contemporary film and screen industry spans theatrical features, television drama, documentary, short film, online content and branded media, and graduates who understand the full production process are well placed across all of these. At the University of Roehampton this three-year programme includes a foundation year option, providing a route for students who need additional preparation before the main film production curriculum. The programme also includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct professional experience in the screen industries before you graduate. You will develop skills in directing, cinematography, editing, screenwriting, sound design and production management, working on practical filmmaking projects that build your portfolio and develop your creative voice. Roehampton's film programme has a strong reputation in London, giving you access to an active professional film and media industry environment. Film production graduates work in film and television production, documentary, short film, digital content creation, post-production, broadcast journalism, and the growing world of online video. Roles span directing, producing, cinematography, editing, sound design, and production coordination. The foundation of practical skills and industry experience the programme builds supports both employed and freelance career paths, and graduates who develop strong portfolios during their studies are well placed to compete for entry-level roles in the industry. Postgraduate study in film, documentary, screenwriting or production management is an option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into research and education.
