About this course

Filmmaking is an art form and a craft, concerned with shaping the moving image into coherent, expressive and meaningful works. Whether working in documentary, narrative fiction, experimental film or screen content of other kinds, the filmmaker must command a wide range of technical and creative skills, from cinematography and sound design to editing, directing and producing, while also developing a clear creative vision and the ability to collaborate in a team. The discipline demands both artistic sensibility and practical problem-solving, and it takes shape through doing as much as through study. At Nottingham Trent University, situated within the Nottingham School of Art and Design, this three-year programme develops your skills in film production and exhibition. You will explore and experiment across the full range of moving-image-making practices, from pre-production planning and on-location shooting to post-production editing and the consideration of how films reach and engage their audiences. The programme encourages innovation within and beyond conventional filmmaking approaches, stimulated by workshops and critical discussion that place your practical work in a broader intellectual and cultural context. The combination of practical studio work with academic rigour means you will graduate with both a strong portfolio and a developed critical perspective on film as a medium. Graduates from filmmaking programmes pursue careers as directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, documentary makers, screen writers and production company founders. Many work across film, television, online content creation and corporate video production. The UK screen industry is substantial and offers a wide range of roles, from large productions to independent and experimental work. Others move into film education, arts programming or festival and exhibition work. Postgraduate study in film production, screenwriting or film studies is a common route for those who want to deepen their specialism or develop a research practice.
