BA Game Design
About this course
Game design is a discipline that sits at the intersection of creativity, interactive systems, and storytelling. A game designer is responsible for the rules, mechanics, and structures that define how a game is played, and for the narrative, world, and aesthetic dimensions that make playing it meaningful and engaging. Good game design requires both artistic vision and logical precision, and the ability to understand how players will experience and interpret the systems you create is central to the craft. The three-year full-time Game Design programme at Birmingham City University provides a creative and supportive environment in which to develop that craft. You will learn the art of creating engaging game narratives, mechanics, and world-building, developing the conceptual and practical skills needed to move from idea to fully realised design. The programme balances artistic vision with technical proficiency, ensuring you graduate industry-ready with a portfolio that demonstrates both creative range and professional quality. You will study game history and theory, level design, player psychology, narrative structure, and the tools and processes used in professional game development, developing a rounded understanding of what makes games work and how to design them with intention. With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme is accessible to students who bring creative ambition and an analytical approach to games. Birmingham City's connections to the UK games industry and the programme's focus on portfolio development give you practical preparation for the competitive graduate market. Graduates from game design programmes pursue careers as game designers, level designers, narrative designers, and creative directors in games studios, as well as in adjacent roles in interactive media, experience design, and virtual reality. Postgraduate study in game design or development is also an option for those wishing to specialise further.
