About this course

Games development is a discipline that combines creative vision with technical precision, bringing together programming, design, art, audio, and narrative into interactive experiences enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors in the creative industries, and the skills it demands, from real-time rendering and physics simulation to user experience design and project management, are increasingly valued beyond games themselves, in film, simulation, training, and virtual environments. At the University of Suffolk, this three-year full-time degree places you inside a studio environment from the start. Rather than keeping theory and practice separate, you work on real games projects alongside your studies, applying programming and design skills as you acquire them. You will explore the full production pipeline, from concept and prototyping through to testing and release, gaining experience of the workflows and collaborative disciplines that professional studios use. A placement or work experience year is included, giving you the opportunity to work in the industry before you graduate and to build professional connections while your skills are fresh. You will develop proficiency in programming languages and game engines, learn to think critically about player experience and game design, and understand the technical constraints and creative possibilities that shape interactive media. Working in teams on projects mirrors the collaborative nature of professional games production and prepares you for the realities of studio life. Graduates from games development programmes move into roles including games programmer, games designer, level designer, technical artist, and producer. The technical and creative skills you develop are also applicable in adjacent industries such as visual effects, simulation, interactive media, and software development more broadly. Many graduates also go on to build independent games or pursue postgraduate study in specialist areas of games or computer science.
