BA Geography
About this course
Geography is the discipline that investigates the relationship between people and the physical environments they inhabit, asking how natural processes create the landscapes, climates, and ecological systems of the Earth and how human societies in turn shape and are shaped by those environments. It spans the natural sciences and the social sciences, engaging with physical geography's study of rivers, coasts, soils, and climate systems alongside human geography's investigation of cities, migration, economic development, and environmental justice. In an era of climate change and global environmental crisis, geographers are among the most urgently needed graduates in the workforce. At Bangor University, set in north Wales with access to some of the most varied and scientifically interesting landscapes in the UK, this three-year full-time programme begins with a foundation year, making it accessible to students who have the intellectual curiosity and commitment that geography demands but who benefit from a supported academic transition. The main degree develops your knowledge across both physical and human geography, with fieldwork playing a central role in connecting classroom learning to real environments. A sandwich year and work placement activity give you professional experience, and a year abroad is also available. Geography graduates are highly employable across environmental consultancy, planning, local government, sustainability, transport, the charity sector, and education. GIS and spatial analysis skills are in growing demand in data-driven industries. The breadth of the degree, spanning scientific and social science competencies, makes geography graduates adaptable to roles that require both types of thinking. Teaching at secondary level is a well-established destination for geography graduates. The foundation year entry route broadens access to this versatile degree, and the combination of fieldwork, professional experience, and possible international study makes Bangor's programme particularly experientially rich. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, or planning is available for those who want to specialise.
