BSc Geography (with integrated year studying abroad)
About this course
Geography examines the relationship between people and the places, environments and systems they inhabit, spanning physical processes from glaciation and river dynamics to climate change, alongside human geographies of urbanisation, migration, economic development and cultural identity. It is one of the few disciplines that bridges the natural and social sciences, giving graduates a methodological breadth that is rare and valuable. The ability to work with quantitative data, conduct fieldwork, interpret maps and satellite imagery, and analyse social and policy questions using qualitative methods makes geography graduates genuinely versatile. At Aberystwyth University you will follow a four-year programme that includes an integrated year studying abroad at one of the university's international or European partner institutions, giving you a genuine international dimension to your geographical education. Aberystwyth's Department of Geography and Earth Sciences is one of the most established in the UK, and its location in one of the most picturesque parts of Europe gives you direct access to varied coastal, upland and rural landscapes as living laboratories for fieldwork and environmental study. You will develop skills in GIS, remote sensing, environmental analysis, research methods and the ability to work effectively in both field and analytical contexts. Geography graduates are highly employable across a wide range of sectors. Environmental consulting, urban and regional planning, international development, the civil service, local government, conservation and ecological consultancy, data analysis, journalism, education, and the many organisations concerned with climate adaptation and environmental management all recruit geography graduates. The international experience embedded in this programme adds further value in a labour market that prizes cross-cultural competence. Postgraduate study in geography, environmental science, urban planning, development studies, GIS or related fields is a well-established route for those seeking to specialise or pursue research careers.
