BA Graphic Design
About this course
Graphic design is the practice of visual communication, using image, typography, colour, and layout to convey ideas, information, and emotion. It underpins everything from brand identities and packaging to digital interfaces, editorial design, and public information, sitting at the intersection of creative thinking and structured problem-solving. As screens, print, and physical environments become ever more saturated with visual content, the ability to design with clarity, originality, and purpose has never been more in demand. At Manchester Metropolitan University, BA Graphic Design is a hands-on, ideas-led programme that develops your skills across both traditional craft and emerging digital technologies. You will work on briefs that challenge you to think conceptually before reaching for tools, learning to articulate and defend your creative decisions. The course introduces you to visual communication in its many forms, including branding, motion graphics, publication design, and interactive media, and you will use industry-standard software and workshop facilities to realise your ideas. Alongside making, you will develop critical awareness of design history, visual culture, and the social and ethical responsibilities that come with the profession. The programme runs over three years full-time and includes both a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to gain real professional experience before you graduate. This direct industry engagement is one of the most valuable aspects of the course, allowing you to build contacts, test your skills in a live environment, and understand what employers actually need from a graphic designer. Graduates go on to roles in design studios, advertising agencies, publishing houses, in-house brand teams, and the technology sector, as well as self-employment as freelance designers. The degree also prepares you well for postgraduate study in graphic design, visual communication, art direction, or related creative disciplines.
