BA Illustration
About this course
Illustration is a discipline that sits at the intersection of fine art, graphic design, and narrative, concerned with making images that communicate, interpret, or give visual form to ideas, stories, and experiences. The illustrator works across an exceptionally wide range of contexts: books for children and adults, editorial and journalism, advertising and branding, animation, character design, comics and graphic novels, scientific and technical illustration, and the growing world of digital and screen-based media. What unites these diverse applications is the fundamental challenge of visual storytelling and the development of a distinctive personal visual language. At Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, this three-year full-time programme develops your practice in vibrant studios and workshops, with dedicated attention from tutors who are all professional illustrators, as the current description reflects. This is an important feature: learning illustration from people who are actively working in the profession brings genuine currency to the teaching and creates a direct connection between the studio environment and professional practice. You will explore a wide range of approaches to image-making, developing technical skills in traditional media including drawing, painting, and printmaking alongside digital tools, while also developing the conceptual thinking and personal visual voice that distinguish a professional illustrator from someone who can simply render images. Critique and professional practice are integrated throughout: you will regularly present and discuss your work with tutors and peers, developing the ability to articulate your intentions and respond to feedback in the way that professional client relationships require. Portfolio development and an understanding of how the illustration industry works, including commissioning, rights, and professional presentation, prepare you practically for the transition from education to practice. Illustration graduates work as freelance illustrators across editorial, publishing, advertising, and design contexts, as well as in animation studios, games development companies, and in-house design teams. Teaching, art direction, and roles in the broader creative industries are also common. Postgraduate study in illustration, animation, or visual communication supports those who wish to develop further specialisms.
