BA Interior Design
About this course
Interior design is concerned with how the quality of the spaces we inhabit can be shaped creatively, technically, and responsibly. It asks how interiors can be made to function well and feel right for the people who use them, while also engaging with the commercial, sustainability, and ecological dimensions of design that are increasingly central to professional practice. Interior designers work across a wide range of contexts, from residential and hospitality environments to retail, healthcare, and cultural spaces, and the most effective work combines creative vision with a practical understanding of materials, technologies, and the constraints of real projects. At Middlesex University this part-time programme allows you to develop your skills and knowledge while fitting study around other commitments. You will explore interiors through a comprehensive examination of commercial design success, developing your creative and practical abilities to turn imaginative ideas into environments that work. The programme addresses financial viability, sustainability, and ecological awareness alongside creative development, building the understanding of responsible design that the profession increasingly demands. You will develop skills in spatial design, technical drawing, material specification, and digital visualisation alongside the critical thinking and communication abilities needed to present and defend design decisions to clients and colleagues. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, ensuring you develop professional experience in a real design context before you graduate. Graduates in interior design find careers across the full range of commercial and residential design sectors. Interior design practice, hospitality and retail design, healthcare environment design, exhibition and display design, and set design are among the most direct destinations. Many graduates work in design studios, architectural practices, or as independent designers, while others move into project management, specification consultancy, or design education. The sandwich year and work placement experience are particularly important for competitive career entry in a field where a strong portfolio of real project experience matters alongside qualification.
