BA Interior Design
About this course
Interior design is the practice of shaping internal spaces to meet human needs, whether those spaces are domestic, commercial, hospitality, retail, or institutional. It is a discipline that combines creative vision with practical knowledge: you need to understand how light, colour, material, and proportion work together to create atmosphere, but also how spaces must function for the people who use them, what building regulations require, and how designs are communicated to clients and contractors. The best interior design is invisible in the sense that it creates environments where people feel at ease without necessarily knowing why. At Southampton Solent University this programme includes a foundation year before the three-year degree, which means the total pathway is four years and gives you a thorough academic and creative preparation before the main course begins. The foundation year is designed to build your skills in drawing, design thinking, and material understanding, ensuring that all students enter the degree proper with a strong foundation regardless of their prior experience. On the degree itself you will develop your design practice through studio projects, working with professional briefs, client scenarios, and a range of spatial scales from individual rooms to large commercial environments. Southampton's connections to the creative and design industries in the South of England support strong graduate outcomes. Interior design graduates work as interior designers in private practice, for architectural firms, for furniture and retail companies, for hotel groups, and in property development. Some specialise in residential work, others in commercial, hospitality, or retail environments. Exhibition and set design are further destinations. The business skills to work as a freelance designer are increasingly important in a sector where self-employment is common. Postgraduate study in interior architecture, spatial design, or related disciplines is available for those who want to develop a research dimension or move into more senior and complex design roles.
