About this course

Marine science and conservation sits at the intersection of oceanography, ecology, and environmental management, examining the biological, chemical, physical, and geological processes that govern the world's oceans and the species that depend on them. The marine environment covers more than seventy per cent of the Earth's surface, regulates the global climate, supports extraordinary biodiversity, and provides food and livelihoods for billions of people. Understanding it scientifically and managing it sustainably are among the most urgent challenges of our time. At Bangor University, you will develop a broad and rigorous understanding of the marine environment, covering ocean physics, marine biology and ecology, conservation biology, environmental monitoring, and the policy frameworks that govern the management of marine resources. Practical fieldwork, laboratory work, and time at sea are central to the programme, ensuring that your scientific understanding is grounded in direct experience of real marine environments. The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you an exceptionally rich combination of academic, professional, and international experience over the course of the degree. It is studied full-time. Graduates of marine science and conservation programmes work in marine conservation organisations, government environmental agencies, environmental consultancies, the aquaculture industry, research institutions, and international bodies concerned with ocean management. The scientific training you receive also provides an excellent foundation for postgraduate research in marine biology, oceanography, or conservation science, where the practical experience gained during the degree is a significant advantage.
