BA Media and Communications
About this course
Media and communications is a field that examines how information, stories and meaning are produced, distributed and received in contemporary society. It sits at the intersection of practical skills and critical understanding, asking both how media works technically and what it does to culture, politics and public life. The discipline covers journalism, public relations, digital media, broadcasting, social media and the platforms and business models that shape them, giving you a broad map of the media landscape as it exists today. At Coventry University you will study across three years of full-time study, developing storytelling abilities, media theory and practical skills across journalism, PR, digital content and live projects. The course includes both a sandwich year in professional practice and a year abroad, giving you an extended period of work experience and international exposure that significantly strengthens your professional readiness. Your placement year places you inside a real media or communications organisation, where you can test and refine your skills in a professional setting and build the portfolio that employers will want to see. Graduates from media and communications programmes work across a wide range of creative and professional industries. Journalism, broadcasting, content production, digital marketing, public relations and corporate communications are all common destinations. Others move into social media management, advertising, campaign strategy, podcast production and documentary filmmaking. The combination of practical skills and critical media literacy is also valued in NGOs, charities and public sector organisations that need to communicate effectively with diverse audiences. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in areas such as journalism, digital media, communications management or media production, particularly those seeking specialist expertise in a rapidly evolving sector.
