BSc Nursing (Mental Health)
About this course
Mental health nursing is a specialist branch of the nursing profession dedicated to supporting people experiencing mental health difficulties, from anxiety and depression through to psychosis, personality disorders, eating disorders, and the mental health dimensions of acute physical illness. Mental health nurses work in inpatient units, community mental health teams, crisis services, schools, prisons, and primary care, forming therapeutic relationships and providing clinical care, advocacy, and emotional support during some of the most difficult periods of people's lives. At Middlesex University in London, this three-year full-time degree allows you to play an important role in a patient's recovery and to positively impact their lives, as the course describes. You will study alongside experienced staff using state-of-the-art facilities and gain clinical experience in leading hospitals and community settings, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the hands-on competencies that safe and effective mental health nursing requires. The programme combines academic study of the psychological, social, and biological dimensions of mental health with substantial clinical placement experience across a range of mental health settings. Graduates who qualify as mental health nurses are eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and can practise in NHS and independent sector settings across the full breadth of mental health services. London's diverse range of NHS trusts, community mental health organisations, and specialist services provides particularly rich opportunities for both clinical experience during the degree and career development after qualification. Career progression into specialist clinical roles, advanced nursing practice, management, and nursing education is well supported. Many mental health nurses also pursue postgraduate study in clinical specialisms, psychological therapies, or health leadership.
