BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the discipline that prepares you to work as a registered paramedic in pre-hospital emergency and urgent care settings. Paramedics are highly trained clinical practitioners who respond to 999 calls and provide care in complex, time-pressured, and often unpredictable environments. The role requires clinical knowledge in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology alongside the practical skills of assessment, intervention, and patient management. It also demands excellent communication, resilience, and the capacity to make sound judgements under significant pressure. At Anglia Ruskin University, you can study in Cambridge or Chelmsford and gain the skills needed to work as a paramedic through a curriculum that combines academic learning with substantial placement experience. You will use modern skills laboratories and specialist equipment to develop your practical competency, practising clinical procedures in simulated settings before applying them in real pre-hospital environments. The programme runs over three years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 104 points. Graduation leads to eligibility for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a registered paramedic, the required qualification for practice in the UK. Paramedics work primarily for NHS ambulance services, but also in urgent care centres, event medicine, offshore and remote medical settings, military and aviation contexts, and the private healthcare sector. The profession offers structured career development, with specialist pathways in critical care, air ambulance, community paramedicine, education, and research. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in advanced clinical practice, emergency care, or related healthcare disciplines.
