BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the discipline that prepares practitioners to respond to medical emergencies and to provide urgent care in the most demanding and unpredictable of all clinical settings: the pre-hospital environment. Paramedics assess and treat patients at the scene of accidents, in people's homes, and in public spaces, often working alone or in pairs, under time pressure, with limited equipment, and without the immediate backup of a hospital team. The role requires clinical knowledge, practical skill, and the judgement and composure to make good decisions when the stakes are high. At University College Birmingham this programme is structured as a four-year degree with an integrated foundation year. The foundation year provides the academic and scientific grounding needed for degree-level paramedic study, making this route particularly suitable for students who have a strong motivation for the work and the right personal qualities but who need some additional preparation before the main clinical degree begins. The degree itself combines theoretical study of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and patient assessment with supervised clinical placements in which you will work alongside qualified paramedics responding to real emergencies. The combination of academic rigour and practical experience is the defining feature of modern paramedic education. Qualifying as a paramedic leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and employment within NHS ambulance trusts, which are the main employers of paramedics in the UK. With experience, paramedics can specialise in areas such as critical care, hazardous area response, or community paramedicine, and can progress to leadership, education, and advanced practice roles. The four-year route via this programme, including the foundation year, is designed for those who are committed to the profession and want to build the clinical and scientific foundations to practise safely and effectively throughout a long career.
