Pharmaceutical sciences is the study of drugs and medicines at a molecular level: how they are designed, synthesised, formulated, tested, and developed into products that are safe and effective for patients. It sits at the intersection of chemistry, biology, and medicine, drawing on organic chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, and drug delivery science to address one of the most complex and consequential challenges in applied science. The pharmaceutical industry is one of the most research-intensive in the world, and the pipeline from molecular discovery to approved medicine requires scientists with a broad and rigorous scientific foundation. At the University of Nottingham, this programme includes a foundation year, providing structured academic preparation for students who benefit from additional scientific grounding before entering degree-level study. The subsequent three years of the main degree develop your knowledge of drug discovery, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, and drug formulation, combining laboratory training with the theoretical understanding of how medicines work and how they are developed. The full programme runs over four years full-time. Graduates of pharmaceutical sciences programmes enter careers in the pharmaceutical industry in roles including drug discovery, formulation development, quality control, regulatory affairs, and clinical research. They also work in the biotechnology sector, in hospital pharmacy, and in academic and government research. The scientific breadth of the degree is valued across the life sciences, and many graduates go on to postgraduate research in pharmaceutical science, pharmacology, or medicinal chemistry, or pursue further professional training in areas such as clinical trials management or regulatory science.
