BEng Product Design Engineering
About this course
Product design engineering is the discipline concerned with creating new products that are simultaneously functional, manufacturable, ergonomically sound and commercially viable. It sits at the intersection of creative design and engineering science, combining the visual and conceptual thinking of the designer with the technical rigour of the engineer. Product designers work on the full range of manufactured objects, from consumer electronics and medical devices to furniture, tools and sporting equipment, and they must balance aesthetics, user needs, material properties, manufacturing processes and cost constraints throughout the design process. At Loughborough University you will study product design engineering over four years of full-time study, on a programme that blends design principles, ergonomics, engineering science and technology with knowledge of manufacturing processes and production technology. The integration of design and engineering at Loughborough reflects the university's long heritage as both a leading design school and a leading engineering institution, and you will benefit from both traditions throughout your studies. You will develop design skills, technical engineering knowledge, user research ability and manufacturing understanding, working through projects that take designs from concept to realised product. The typical tariff of 136 reflects a programme that requires both design aptitude and the mathematical and scientific preparation to handle engineering content. Graduates work as product designers, design engineers, innovation consultants, product development managers, user experience designers and manufacturing development specialists across a wide range of industries including consumer products, medical devices, sports equipment, furniture, electronics and transport. Many go on to postgraduate study in design, engineering or innovation management. Loughborough's strong connections to industry and its reputation in both design and engineering consistently support graduate employability, and the MEng route through the programme provides a higher-level qualification for those who want to pursue engineering at the deepest level.
