BSc Product Design (Welsh Medium)
About this course
Product design is the discipline that shapes the objects and experiences that surround daily life, from domestic appliances and medical devices to packaging, furniture and interactive tools. It sits at the intersection of creative thinking, user-centred research and engineering understanding, asking not just how things can be made but how they should work and who they should serve. At Bangor University, this three-year full-time programme is offered through the medium of Welsh, making it a distinctive choice for Welsh speakers who want to pursue a design education in their first language. The programme includes a foundation year and incorporates sandwich, year abroad and work placement options, providing both additional academic preparation and practical professional exposure. You will develop skills in ideation, sketching, model-making, CAD modelling and the physical realisation of design concepts, alongside the research methods, human factors knowledge and materials understanding that underpin good design practice. User research, prototyping and iterative development are central to the design process you will practise throughout the programme. The foundation year consolidates your creative and technical grounding before the main degree begins. Studying through the medium of Welsh adds a cultural and professional dimension, and graduates emerge with design skills applicable across industry alongside Welsh-language professional competence. A typical tariff of around 136 points is expected. Product design graduates work in industries including consumer products, medical devices, automotive, furniture, packaging, toy design and user experience, as well as in design consultancies and in-house design teams across many sectors. Many also pursue postgraduate study in product design, design engineering or related specialisms, including master's programmes that focus on sustainable design or advanced manufacturing. The discipline's blend of creativity and technical rigour makes graduates adaptable across a wide range of commercial and creative contexts.
