BSc Quantity Surveying
About this course
Quantity surveying is the construction industry's financial and contractual discipline. Quantity surveyors are responsible for managing the costs and commercial aspects of construction projects, from initial estimates and procurement through contract administration and final account, ensuring that projects are delivered within budget and that the financial risks associated with construction are properly understood and managed. It is a profession that combines technical knowledge of construction with financial and legal expertise, and practitioners work on some of the largest and most complex projects in the built environment. At Edinburgh Napier University, this part-time programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic qualification. You will study construction technology, measurement and estimating, procurement and contracts, project cost management, commercial management, dispute resolution and the legal framework governing construction projects. The programme develops both the technical skills of the quantity surveying profession and the commercial and interpersonal judgement needed to manage complex contractual relationships. Graduates typically work towards chartered membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) or the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES), and this degree provides a strong platform for those routes. Career opportunities span major contractors, consultancies, project management firms, developers, public sector clients and specialist cost consultants. The combination of part-time study and substantial professional experience built into this programme means many students are already working in the industry and use the degree to formalise and advance their expertise. Postgraduate study in construction management, project management or quantity surveying is also an option for those who want to specialise further.
