BSc Quantity Surveying
About this course
Quantity surveying is the commercial management profession of the construction industry, concerned with estimating, planning, and controlling the costs of building and civil engineering projects from inception through to completion. Quantity surveyors sit at the financial heart of construction, advising clients on what projects will cost, managing contracts, assessing the value of work done, and ensuring that budgets are controlled and disputes resolved fairly. As construction projects grow in complexity and global reach, the demand for commercially skilled professionals who understand both the technical and contractual dimensions of the built environment has never been higher. At Leeds Beckett this three-year full-time programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which is the professional body that governs quantity surveying in the UK and internationally. RICS accreditation is a significant marker of quality and the recognised route to becoming a chartered quantity surveyor. You will develop expertise in construction technology, law and contract management, economics of the built environment, project management, risk and value management, and the digital tools that modern quantity surveying practice uses. From the outset you will learn to think like a professional, analysing problems, managing uncertainty, and communicating clearly to clients and project teams. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, providing professional experience, international context, and a practical portfolio. Graduates move into careers as quantity surveyors and commercial managers in consultancy, contracting, project management, and client-side roles across residential, commercial, infrastructure, and public sector construction. Many work towards chartered membership of RICS, and others go on to postgraduate study in quantity surveying, construction management, or project management.
