BEng Structural Engineering with Architecture
About this course
Structural engineering with architecture is a programme that sits at the fertile and demanding intersection of two disciplines that must work together to create good buildings. Architecture concerns itself with the spatial, aesthetic and cultural dimensions of the built environment, asking what buildings should look like and how they should be experienced. Structural engineering provides the technical mastery to make buildings stand: the design of the frames, slabs, foundations, trusses and shells that carry loads safely and efficiently. Professionals who understand both disciplines are exceptionally valuable in the design process. At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme is taught jointly with the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, part of the Edinburgh College of Art. This collaboration means you are taught by experts in both disciplines in an environment that takes architectural quality seriously. The programme includes a year abroad, which provides exposure to different architectural and structural traditions and the chance to experience engineering education in another country. You will study structural mechanics and analysis, materials and structural systems, foundation engineering, steel, concrete and timber design, alongside architectural history, design principles, construction technology and the professional contexts in which both engineers and architects practise. Design projects are central, developing your ability to move from structural concept to detailed design in collaboration with architectural thinking. Graduates go on to careers in structural engineering consultancies, architectural practices that value engineering literacy, infrastructure and building design firms and specialist contractors. Many pursue professional qualification as chartered structural engineers. Some go on to postgraduate study in structural engineering, civil engineering or architectural technology, building on the integrated foundation the degree provides.
