BA Visual Effects
About this course
Visual effects is the discipline concerned with creating, compositing, and integrating digital imagery and computer-generated elements with live-action footage to achieve results that are impossible, impractical, or too dangerous to capture on camera. It is a technical and creative field that has become central to the production of feature films, television drama, commercials, and online content, encompassing compositing, 3D animation, simulation, matte painting, and the full pipeline of post-production visual work that transforms raw footage into finished screen imagery. At Anglia Ruskin University, this four-year full-time programme develops your technical skills in industry-standard visual effects software alongside the creative and conceptual foundations that effective VFX work requires. You will study compositing, 3D modelling and animation, digital lighting, simulation, and the integration of computer-generated imagery with live-action plates, working through the processes and pipelines used in professional production. The programme also develops your understanding of the history and aesthetic conventions of visual effects, giving you the critical awareness to make informed creative decisions alongside technical ones. Project-based learning and practical production work are central to the experience, building a portfolio of work that demonstrates your capabilities to prospective employers. Visual effects graduates work as compositors, 3D artists, technical directors, lighting artists, and generalist VFX artists in film and television production companies, post-production facilities, advertising, and games studios. The UK visual effects industry is internationally significant and provides real employment opportunities for skilled graduates. Further study at postgraduate level is an option for those wishing to develop specialist technical expertise or move into research and development within the VFX sector.
