BSc Web Design and Development
About this course
Web design and development sits at the point where creative thinking and technical skill meet, shaping the digital experiences that billions of people use every day. It encompasses the visual design of interfaces, the code that makes them work, and the understanding of how users actually behave online, drawing on graphic design, computer science, and user experience research in ways that neither discipline could supply on its own. At Roehampton University this programme runs over three years full time and includes both a foundation year and a sandwich year with a work placement. The foundation year gives you a grounding in design principles, computational thinking, and digital tools before you move into the main degree, which makes the programme well suited to students who are entering from a range of educational backgrounds. The sandwich placement year, spent working in a professional environment, is one of the most valuable parts of the degree: it gives you real industry experience, professional contacts, and a clearer sense of your strengths and direction before you complete your studies. Across the programme you will develop skills in web technologies and front-end development, visual and interaction design, user experience design, content management, and digital strategy. You will learn to think about design from the perspective of the user as well as the visual and technical craft, and to produce work that functions well across devices and contexts. Projects and portfolio work are central to how progress is assessed. Graduates go on to careers as web developers, front-end developers, UX and UI designers, digital project managers, content strategists, and digital producers across a wide range of industries. The practical experience gained during the placement year is a significant advantage in a competitive field, and many graduates secure graduate roles with employers they encountered during their placement.
