In a nutshell

Orthoptists see patients of all ages with a wide range of conditions affecting their vision. They are specialists in assessing vision in children and those with communication difficulties.

What you'd do

Assess children and adults for squint, lazy eye, and eye movement problems
Carry out orthoptic investigations including cover test and binocular vision tests
Deliver occlusion therapy programmes for amblyopia
Monitor visual development in children referred from screening
Write clinical reports and collaborate with ophthalmologists
Advise patients and parents on treatment plans and progress
