Architecture sits in a genuinely interesting middle ground: AI tools are already reshaping how early-stage design and visualisation work gets done, but the profession's core is stubbornly human. Planning negotiations, client relationships, site-specific judgement, and legal accountability cannot be offloaded to a model. The real squeeze is happening at the technical drafting and concept-generation end, where junior architects traditionally built their skills. That creates a pipeline problem worth taking seriously before you commit to a seven-year qualification route.
Within 5 Years
Workflow disruption, role compression
Generative design tools like Autodesk's AI suite and emerging LLM-integrated BIM platforms are already cutting the time needed for concept iterations, planning documentation, and specification writing. Practices will use fewer Part 1 and Part 2 assistants to produce the same output. The 20-year horizon is genuinely uncertain, but the physical, legal, and social complexity of buildings means human architects are unlikely to be displaced wholesale.
