Audio engineering sits in a genuinely interesting position where AI is reshaping the toolkit without replacing the professional. Tools like iZotope RX, Adobe Podcast, and AI mastering services (eMastered, Landr) are automating the more repetitive end of the work, particularly basic mixing cleanup, noise reduction, and even rough mastering. However, the craft of shaping a sonic identity for an artist, managing a live concert environment, or designing sound for film and games still demands ears, instinct, and human collaboration that AI cannot yet replicate. The junior end of the market is tightening, but experienced engineers who understand both the art and the business remain in genuine demand.

AI-assisted mixing and mastering tools will handle the bulk of routine cleanup and levelling tasks, effectively raising the baseline standard of amateur productions. This puts pressure on engineers who compete primarily on technical correctness rather than creative vision. Engineers who adapt their workflow to use AI tools as accelerators rather than threats will be more productive and more hireable.

Specialisation becomes essential
Generalist audio engineers handling a bit of everything will find the market increasingly difficult, as AI handles the commodity work and clients expect more for less. In twenty years, much of what is currently called audio engineering at the commercial end may be largely AI-orchestrated, with humans in a supervisory, curatorial, or creative direction role rather than hands-on technical execution. However, live performance, high-stakes broadcast, and artistically ambitious projects will still need skilled human ears making judgement calls that matter. The profession is unlikely to disappear but will look quite different, probably closer to sound design and audio direction than traditional mixing and mastering. Those entering the field now who build genuine creative expertise and stay close to emerging audio formats will have relevant careers throughout this period.
How to stay ahead
Specialise in growth formats early
Spatial audio, Dolby Atmos mixing, and audio for virtual and augmented reality are areas where demand is growing and AI tools are least mature. Getting certified and building a portfolio in these formats now positions you ahead of the majority of working engineers. Streaming platforms and games studios are actively hiring people with these specific skills.
Learn the technical layer beneath the tools
Understanding acoustics, psychoacoustics, and signal processing at a fundamental level means you can work with any toolset, including AI-powered ones, rather than being dependent on a single platform. This also makes you credible in technical sales, product roles at audio tech companies, or broadcast engineering, all of which pay more consistently than freelance mixing work. Engineers who understand why the tools work are far harder to replace than those who only know how to operate them.

The audio industry runs on relationships and reputation more than CVs.
