Bar Staff
What you'd actually do
As bar staff, you pour drinks, mix cocktails, take food and drink orders, handle payments and keep the bar clean and stocked. You need to be quick and accurate, especially when it's packed with customers, and you need to stay friendly and patient even when people are rude or impatient. You'll learn the names of regular customers, remember what they usually order, and build relationships with them.
The work is social and active - you're always on your feet, chatting, listening to music and being part of the buzz. Many bars offer training in cocktail-making and customer service, and if you're good, you can move up to bar supervisor or manager. Some people start as bar staff and end up running their own pub or restaurant. You'll learn practical skills, meet all kinds of people, and work in a team where you have to trust each other to get through the rushes.
