What you'd actually do

As a clinical coder, you read patient records carefully and assign official codes to every diagnosis and treatment. Hospitals use these codes to bill for the work they do, researchers use them to understand patterns in health, and the NHS uses them to plan which services it needs most. You work with systems like ICD-10 (for diagnoses) and OPCS-4 (for operations), and you have to be precise because errors ripple through the whole healthcare system.

Your day is mostly spent in medical records, reading detailed notes from doctors and nurses, then deciding which codes apply. You'll ask doctors questions when the notes are unclear, to make sure you're coding accurately. You'll also check your own work and others' work for mistakes, create reports showing hospital activity and trends, and keep up with changes to coding rules. It's detail-focused, but your work helps hospitals run better and helps doctors and researchers understand health more clearly.

This is a very small, highly specialised workforce compared to today. Anyone entering healthcare data now should treat clinical coding as a foundation skill rather than a career endpoint.

Pursue qualifications in health informatics, NHS data standards, or healthcare analytics alongside any coding training. Understanding how SNOMED CT, FHIR, and integrated care records work will make you the person who configures and audits AI systems rather than the person replaced by them. Courses at institutions like City, University of London or Coventry offer relevant health data pathways.
Develop clinical audit and quality expertise
Clinical audit, casemix management, and Healthcare Resource Group analysis require contextual judgement that AI cannot easily replicate. These adjacent skills keep you inside the NHS data ecosystem but on the governance and interpretation side rather than the production side. Building experience in audit cycles and presenting data to clinical teams is a strong differentiator.
Understand AI tools rather than compete with them
Coders who learn to evaluate, configure, and challenge AI coding software will be far more employable than those who simply avoid it. Seek out trusts piloting tools like Medicode or Computer Assisted Coding systems and get hands-on experience with their outputs. Being the person who knows where the algorithm fails in complex oncology or trauma cases is a genuinely scarce skill.
Position towards clinical documentation improvement
Clinical Documentation Improvement specialists work directly with consultants and junior doctors to improve the quality of notes upstream, which in turn improves coding accuracy and funding capture. This role blends clinical knowledge, communication skills, and data understanding in a way that is much harder to automate. It also pays better and carries more professional status than standard coding work.
