What you'd actually do
As a farmer, you grow food and raise animals on your land. You decide what to plant, when to plant it, and how to look after the crops as they grow - watching the weather, managing pests and disease, and making sure animals have what they need.
Your days are physical and varied. You might be ploughing fields, fixing machinery, checking on livestock, keeping records of what you have planted and harvested, or talking to other farmers and advisers about new ways to do things. Farming means working with nature, so you have to be flexible and ready to solve problems as they come up.

Farming is one of the most resilient careers in the face of AI disruption, rooted in physical skill, environmental judgement and hands-on decision-making that no algorithm can replicate from a server rack. AI and precision agriculture tools are genuinely changing how farms operate, with sensors, drones and yield-prediction software becoming more common, but these assist the farmer rather than replace them. The physical demands of operating machinery, reading land conditions in real time, managing livestock welfare and responding to unpredictable weather remain deeply human responsibilities. Entry-level farming roles and farm management positions are not contracting in the way that desk-based knowledge roles are.

Workflow tools adopted
Over the next five years, precision agriculture technology will become far more mainstream across UK farms, including drone-based crop monitoring, AI-assisted disease detection via smartphone apps and automated irrigation systems. Farmers who embrace these tools will see productivity gains, but the tools themselves require human operators who understand the land they are surveying. The core daily work of farming changes very little in this window. Early adopters with technical literacy will have a competitive edge on yield and subsidy eligibility.
Within 10 Years
Agri-tech integration accelerates
By the mid-2030s, autonomous tractors and robotic harvesting systems will be commercially viable and increasingly common on large arable farms, reducing the need for seasonal labour in specific narrow tasks like fruit picking or row-crop harvesting. However, farm management, livestock oversight, strategic planning and environmental compliance will still require skilled human judgement. Smaller and mixed farms, which make up a large portion of UK agriculture, will remain highly dependent on experienced human operators. The role evolves rather than shrinks, and those with agronomy knowledge will be directing the technology rather than being displaced by it.
Within 20 Years
Managed evolution, not replacement
Over a twenty-year horizon, vertical farming, lab-grown protein and AI-optimised supply chains will reshape parts of the food industry, but outdoor farming of staple crops, livestock management and specialist produce will remain a human-led sector. Robotics capable of replacing the full range of physical farming tasks across varied terrain and conditions remains a very distant prospect. The farmer of 2045 will be more data-literate and will work alongside more automation, but the core profession survives intact. Population growth and climate-driven food security concerns actually increase the strategic importance of skilled farmers over this period.
How to stay ahead
Build precision agriculture literacy
Get comfortable with platforms like John Deere Operations Centre, Trimble or satellite NDVI mapping tools while you are still studying or in early roles. Farmers who can interpret data from sensors and drones and translate it into practical decisions command higher salaries and attract investment. This is the single fastest way to future-proof your position in the sector.
Pursue agri-environment scheme knowledge
UK Government funding through Sustainable Farming Incentive, Countryside Stewardship and similar schemes rewards farmers who can demonstrate environmental stewardship with documented, knowledge-led practices. Understanding how to apply for, manage and report on these schemes is a genuine financial skill that many farmers lack. A degree-level understanding of ecology and land management puts you in a strong position to maximise farm income beyond just crop yield.
Develop business and supply chain skills
Modern farming is as much about procurement, contracts, market timing and cost management as it is about growing food. Farmers who understand their margins, negotiate well with retailers or wholesalers, and manage inputs like fertiliser and fuel costs strategically are significantly more profitable. Pairing practical farming knowledge with basic business acumen, even through a short CPD course, makes a measurable difference to farm viability.
Specialise in high-value or niche production
Organic certification, heritage breeds, specialist soft fruits and direct-to-consumer models like farm shops or box schemes carry stronger margins and are less exposed to commodity price volatility. These markets also tend to be less easily disrupted by large-scale automation because they rely on quality, provenance and consumer relationships. Identifying a specialism early in your career gives you a defensible niche that is harder for industrial-scale agri-tech to undercut.
