What you'd actually do

As a heavy vehicle technician, you service and repair big vehicles like buses, HGVs, bulldozers and refuse trucks. You work in a garage or workshop, often on your own or with one or two other technicians. Using computer tools, you diagnose what is wrong with a vehicle, then take it apart and fix the problem - whether that is an engine leak, brake failure, or electrical fault.

The work is hands-on and physically demanding. You will spend time under lorries, in engine bays and in tight spaces, sometimes working in poor weather. You need to be very careful with safety and follow strict rules. Some jobs need real problem-solving - a technician might have only a vague description of a fault and needs to work it out through testing. The satisfaction comes from getting a big vehicle back on the road safe and ready for work. As you get more experienced, you might move into management or specialise in one type of vehicle, like hybrid engines.

Develop fluency with diagnostic software platforms
Tools like Delphi DS, Hella Gutmann, and manufacturer-specific telematics systems are becoming central to efficient workshop operations. Rather than treating these as a box-ticking exercise, invest time in genuinely understanding what the data means and how to interrogate it beyond surface-level fault codes. Technicians who can bridge physical mechanical knowledge with intelligent use of diagnostic software are far more valuable than those who rely on either alone.
Build knowledge of autonomous vehicle sensor systems
ADAS components, LiDAR calibration, radar sensors, and camera systems are already appearing on modern heavy vehicles and will become standard within a decade. Understanding how to inspect, calibrate, and replace these systems correctly is a niche that very few current technicians hold. Even a foundational awareness puts you ahead of most colleagues and makes you indispensable when fleets begin integrating these technologies at scale.
