What you'd actually do

As an IT business analyst or systems designer, you are the bridge between the people who use computers at work and the people who build the software. You talk to workers and bosses to find out what they need, then you design systems that solve those problems. You might work on anything from hospital booking systems to apps that help banks keep track of money.

Your job involves asking lots of questions, sketching out plans for how software should work, and checking that the finished product does what everyone wanted. You spend time in meetings talking to different teams - sometimes with managers, sometimes with the people actually using the software. You need to think clearly about how things should fit together and explain your ideas in a way everyone can understand.

AI tools are already automating significant portions of requirements documentation, system diagramming, and process mapping, which directly eats into the bread-and-butter work of junior roles. However, the deeply political and relational side of the job, reading stakeholder dynamics, navigating organisational resistance, and making high-stakes architectural trade-offs, remains stubbornly human. By 2046, the distinction between a systems designer and an AI orchestrator may have collapsed entirely for routine enterprise work. Practitioners who remain will function more like senior consultants or technology strategists, commissioning, interrogating, and governing AI-produced architectures rather than drawing them. Organisations will still need humans who can be held accountable, explain decisions to boards and regulators, and manage the messy human side of transformation programmes. The role exists, but it looks closer to a principal consultant than a traditional BA.
How to stay ahead
Build commercial and strategic credibility early
AI can draft a process map; it cannot walk into a boardroom and make a CFO trust a technology investment. Pursue modules, placements, or side projects that give you genuine exposure to business cases, P&L thinking, and organisational change. This is the layer of the job that creates career longevity.
Learn to work with AI tooling, not alongside it passively
Tools like GitHub Copilot, AI requirements assistants, and LLM-powered diagramming are already in enterprise use. Graduates who can critically evaluate, prompt engineer, and quality-control AI outputs are far more valuable than those who simply know how to produce those outputs manually. Get hands-on with these tools during your degree, not after.
Specialise in high-accountability domains
Healthcare IT, financial services infrastructure, defence systems, and regulated data environments all demand human sign-off, ethical scrutiny, and regulatory compliance expertise that AI cannot own. Specialising early in a sector with genuine compliance stakes insulates your career from pure commodity automation pressure.
Develop stakeholder facilitation as a distinct skill
Requirements gathering is not just about documentation; it is about running difficult conversations, surfacing hidden agendas, and building consensus across competing interests. Invest in structured facilitation training, negotiation skills, or even psychology-adjacent modules. This is the part of the job most resistant to automation and most undersupplied by typical IT graduates.
