What you'd actually do

As a metal fabricator and finisher, you work with metal to make parts and products. You might make small precise components for machinery, build frameworks for buildings, or create parts for vehicles and aircraft. You read technical drawings and work from them carefully, because a mistake can make something dangerous.

You'll cut and shape metal using saws, lasers, presses and other machines. You'll weld pieces together and check that joints are strong. You need a steady hand, good eyesight and a careful approach. After assembly, you'll finish surfaces by grinding, polishing or coating them to make them look good and last longer. You work alongside other fabricators and follow health and safety rules closely. How to stay ahead
Pursue an apprenticeship over a degree
A Level 3 or Level 4 apprenticeship in engineering or metal fabrication gives you paid, practical experience and a recognised qualification without student debt. Employers in aerospace, defence, and construction actively sponsor apprentices and often offer permanent roles upon completion. This is the single best investment of your time and energy to enter this field.
Build CNC and CAD competency early
Understanding how to operate CNC plasma cutters, laser cutters, and press brakes, as well as read and interpret CAD files, separates good fabricators from great ones. Many training providers and colleges offer short courses in CAD interpretation and CNC operation alongside core fabrication qualifications. This digital literacy will only grow in importance as workshops modernise.

Aerospace, defence, medical device manufacturing, and offshore energy all require fabricators who can meet extremely tight tolerances and compliance standards. Gaining relevant certifications such as coded welding qualifications significantly increases your earning potential and job security.
