Residential Childcare Practitioner
What you'd actually do
As a residential childcare practitioner, you work with children and young people who live in a care home because they cannot stay with their families for various reasons. You become a trusted adult in their lives and help them feel safe, cared for and valued. It is demanding work, but it is also very rewarding.
You create a home-like atmosphere where young people can relax and feel at home. You help them with daily tasks like homework and meals, play games and sports with them, and listen when they need to talk. You work as part of a team with social workers, teachers and counsellors, all working together to help each young person. You also keep careful records to track how each young person is doing and make sure the home is safe and clean.
